INSERVICE CONTENT OUTLINE

HELPING HOSTILE, ANGRY STUDENTS
BECOME COOPERATIVE, ENGAGED LEARNERS

Are you spending more and more time dealing with students' anger and its counter productive results?
  • belligerence
  • defiance
  • disruption
  • hostility
  • arguments
  • yelling
  • threats
  • fights
When students are unable to deal effectively with their anger and the situations that spark it, they become victims of the person and the circumstances that make them angry.

This program gives educators specific techniques to help students become the masters of the circumstances they encounter in life.

VICTIM
OF
CIRCUMSTANCES
MASTER
OF
YOURSELF
This change is brought about as students learn to master their anger and resolve conflicts peacefully.  The result is a student with the SKILLS and CHARACTER to succeed in school, life, and personal relationships because they have the skills to get what they want in ways that maintain dignity and respect for themselves and others.

THIS DYNAMIC, EXPERIENTIAL INSERVICE WILL COVER THESE TOPICS:

MASTERING ANGER

  • see anger as a powerless state
  • identify anger's harmful effects
  • understand anger is a choice, not an uncontrollable, biological reaction
  • learn to reject invitations to become angry
  • identify the feelings that lead up to anger
  • understand how all anger has its roots in caring
  • break the chain of feeling before reaching anger
  • dissipate anger's negative energy in a healthy way
  • define the underlying issue from which the anger arose

RESOLVING CONFLICTS

  • eliminate blaming others
  • identify personal actions that contributed to the dispute
  • recognize other's rights are as valid as yours
  • see things from the other person's perspective
  • let the other person know you understand his position
  • express your side without eliciting a defensive reaction from others
  • develop agreement on issue to be resolved
  • negotiate to win-win
